Beginner's Book for the Flute by Trevor Wye

Book 2 carries on ideas of lesser-used key signatures, duets, and expanded tone exercises. Another Wye favorite is the idea of developing a firm low register tone is seen as most songs are in that range, with some slips up into the middle register. Notes using ledger lines above the staff are finally introduced about a quarter of the way into the book, with some practice on them immediately and a tone exercise, of course focusing on these new notes. Most of the new material in the beginning of the book focuses on time signatures, particulary 2/2 and compound times. Syncopation is introduced in the form of a dance tune, as well as some sixteenth note syncopations (16th-8th-16th) immediately following this piece. In other musical things, grace notes make a frequent appearance decorating the time mostly before a note. Along with the long tone exercises, there are frequent scale exercises in many keys, and focusing more heavily on sharp keys – up to 7 sharps! The repertoire features tunes from familiar composers, and some other lesser known, as well as traditional folk songs. The grand finale piece is “Grand Finale Minuet with Variations” arranged by Wye himself. He ends the book with final notes in the top register of A#3, B3, and C4, however there are no exercises or tunes for which to practice them.
